Dr. Lael Telfeyan is an accomplished, well-respected supportive psychotherapist whose specialties include work with adults, adolescents and children in individual, family and couples therapy.  She is warm and down to earth with a dynamic approach which creates a safe and comforting environment for her clients. Dr. Telfeyan has worked with people of all ages, including infants and their mothers and fathers; growing children; adolescents; and older adults in a variety of settings. She has expertise in the area of trauma including sexual abuse and child abuse. She has much experience in the areas of adolescent development, family dysfunction, attachment issues, substance use and other traumatic circumstances.

Each person is seen as a unique individual who has their own special life experiences and circumstances. Dr. Telfeyan focuses on the strengths of each client in order to help them better cope with their difficulties, impediments and concerns while setting short and long term plans that will help manage problems and arrive at solutions. Clients are valued and respected and viewed as having a level of expertise through their own self-knowledge in the treatment process. Together, Dr. Telfeyan and her clients identify their talents and skills and target family and community supports and resources.

Most importantly, Dr. Telfeyan offers a non-judgmental and respectful setting. There is no right or wrong to how someone is feeling. The beginning to problem solving is to bring out the inner self while also looking at some very practical issues in daily life. Every person has their own personal story or narrative. Often, people feel misunderstood or judged by others. This experience often interferes with one’s overall functioning and may contribute to discomforting anxiety and depression. Relationships with family, friends and work are often affected.

Another aspect of treatment is self expression. Improving communication skills is another goal of treatment. Helping clients to express their feelings, thoughts, values and attitudes through their own voice can often alleviate conflict, depression and anxiety.Dr. Telfeyan has a Ph.D. from New York University and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of California. She has taught social work graduate school courses in clinical practice and human behavior at New York University, Stony Brook University and Molloy College.

Dr. Telfeyan is available for emergencies by telephone twenty-four hours a day and can set up appointments for crises, if necessary.  She will help you secure the wraparound services that you may require through referrals such as medication evaluations, psychological testing and other medical or educational services.
